Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has submitted a plea to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to relocate PTI Chairman Imran Khan from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail. As he has been given Class-C at Attock jail despite giving him A-Class as per his stature.
The petition argued that considering his “education, lifestyle, and societal and political standing,” he should be provided improved accommodations or A-class amenities while incarcerated.
The petition highlighted that the petitioner hails from a prosperous background since childhood, and his educational achievements, lifestyle, and prominent position in society have accustomed him to a higher standard of living. It noted his graduation from the prestigious Oxford University in the UK and his role as the captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team.
The petition contended that based on Imran Khan’s social and political stature, as well as his educational background, he qualifies for A-Class facilities as outlined in Rule 243 and Rule 248 of the Pakistan Prison Rules.
Imran Khan was arrested on August 5 following his conviction by a district and sessions court in the federal capital on charges related to corrupt practices concerning the state gift depository. Despite denying the allegations, Judge Humayun Dilawar handed him a three-year prison sentence and imposed a fine of Rs100,000, along with an immediate arrest warrant.
Subsequent to his arrest, Imran Khan was transferred to Attock jail, where he is currently being held in a confined cell measuring 9 x 11 feet.
The petition, filed by Imran Khan’s legal representative Naeem Haider Panjotha, also sought permission for his legal team, personal physician, and family members to visit him. The filing emphasized Dr. Faisal Sultan’s role as the petitioner’s physician for twenty-five years, with a comprehensive understanding of his medical history. Dr. Sultan’s access was deemed necessary due to previous injuries suffered by Imran Khan, including a fall in 2013 and bullet injuries sustained during the Wazirabad attack.
The plea urged the court to deem Imran Khan’s detention at Attock jail as “unlawful” and requested his transfer to Adiala jail. It further insisted on his right to meet his family, physician, and political associates in the “interest of justice.”
Sources informed Geo News that a medical team has been appointed to monitor Imran Khan’s health in two shifts. Additionally, it was noted that he has been relocated from Class C to Barrack No. 2. However, in accordance with the directives of the Punjab Home Department, the PTI chairman will be moved to B-class accommodations.
