In a decisive move, the interim government of Punjab has taken stern action against Qingqi rickshaws, imposing a comprehensive ban that extends across the entire province, including the bustling city of Lahore.
Ibrahim Hassan Murad, the interim Provincial Minister responsible for Transport, Livestock, and Mines & Minerals, disclosed that a 30-day warning had been issued to all rickshaw owners. He emphasized the impending crackdown set to commence after the completion of this grace period, targeting not only the owners but also those engaged in the illicit production of motorcycle and loader rickshaws.

Furthermore, the authorities have decided to enforce a ban on all rickshaws in major cities lacking approval from the transport department. The government is gearing up for a subsequent crackdown in smaller towns and rural areas.
Chief Secretary Punjab, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, had earlier declared a prohibition on the manufacturing and sale of new Qingqi rickshaws. It is noteworthy that the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab had introduced a 30-day window for the free registration of Qingqi rickshaws.
Highlighting the environmental concerns, he pointed out that a staggering 95% of rickshaws in Punjab operate without proper registration or fitness certificates, significantly contributing to pollution in the region. This bold move by the provincial government aims to address these issues and pave the way for a cleaner and more regulated transportation system.
